About Iceland South Coast
Iceland's South Coast offers a breathtaking landscape defined by thundering waterfalls, sprawling glaciers, and black sand beaches. This region captures the untamed spirit of the North Atlantic with its accessible natural wonders that change drastically with the seasons. It is a photographer's paradise and an adventurer's dream, stretching from the outskirts of Reykjavik down towards Vík and beyond.
How to Explore
Most travelers base themselves in either Selfoss, Hvolsvöllur, or Vík to explore the South Coast efficiently. Renting a 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended, especially in shoulder or winter seasons, to navigate the Ring Road safely. Most natural sites are located directly off Route 1, making them easily accessible by car, but require walking on potentially slippery or uneven terrain. You should plan your itinerary as a series of day trips from your chosen base, allocating ample time for spontaneous stops at pull-offs.
